Fast Forward

My how time flies :) Let's see, where to start this time...

I guess we'll start off with the good news. We both scored awesome jobs and the move to Hawaii is on!!! November 1st is the big day. Can't wait!

Aren will be with URS in Honolulu. He'll have a LOT more variety with this job and the travel opportunities sound great. Guam, Korea, Japan. Can't beat that although I hope they don't take him too soon or keep him too long. I've gotten rather used to the 2-3 day Indy trips but I'm not sure I'd do so well with a 1-2 weeker.

I will be working with the University of Hawaii Marine Ecology folks at Coconut Island. Still sounds strange. I haven't spent much time in the ocean since I was about 12 or so. And I've never been diving which happens to be requirement of the job I will have to work on as soon as I get there. Weird. Sounds really cool though. I will be working on mapping the coral reefs in the northwestern islands and modeling in 3D. Sounds like I will have plenty of inter island travel which rocks. I think that will help immensely with getting to know the place and fending off the "rock fever" everyone likes to warn you about. Most of all I'm really looking forward to working with people that actually care about their job. Academia sounds really good right now.

It's really interesting watching peoples reactions when you tell them you're moving to Hawaii. You get everything from the people who get really excited and "Oh my God, that is SO cool!" to some people who just say "Oh, really." It's the difference between "I'm really happy for you!" and "Bitch." As people who live in Minnesota, they picture Mai Tais and hammocks hanging from palm trees. The evil part of me loves that they think that though :)

What you don't get from people in MN but we got constantly from the islanders when we were there in September was the very suspicious "Why?" They know the other side of living there. That with all the beaches, and natural beauty, and idyllic weather is still life. We will be much less financially comfortable than we are now, we will still have bills, and work, and school and after school and all the things that families deal with. We will however have plenty of beach time on the weekends too :)

Well I had more to say but this editor decided to loose a bunch of text. Errr... Instead of try to peice it all ack together, I will just leave it at good night for now and I will try my best to post again before Christmas :)
